Last Thursday night and during most of Friday 20cms of snow fell. It then turned to rain and by Monday most of the snow had disappeared!! Apparently the weather lore that I wrote about last time does not apply if the snow melts due to rain!!
There are a large number of mice and voles at the moment, and consequently the local population of Hawk Owls has increased.
Thought I would write about a couple of examples of local weather lore relating to the first snow of winter.
- If the first snow to fall settles under the trees, the snow will remain. If there is still bare ground under the trees, the snow will disappear!
- If it snow’s three times without the snow melting, then the snow will remain for the rest of the winter.
The snow has settled under the trees and it has snowed three times without the melting so it would appear that the snow is here to stay!!
I had planned to travel to the cabin early on Saturday morning, but we had a significant fall of snow here in Nattavaara on Friday I so I had to change the tyres on the cars, from summer to winter tyres.
I arrived at the cabin in the middle of the afternoon, with the temperature already below freezing, but surprisingly there had been very little snow fall there. I made fire in the cabin to get it warm inside,
and then gathered some pieces of scrap wood and made a bird table.
It only took about a half-hour before the birds started to come and feed.
By the early evening the cabin was warn inside and cosy with light from both the oil lamps and the open fire.
I slept well and next morning I got up early and drove home. Will this be my last visit to the cabin this year….we shall see.
Before leaving for England, I had a weekend at the cabin. The boat house is leaning more and more towards the lake and I have not been able to store the boat inside for over a year now, so I decided (with help from Teres’ dad) to begin repairs.
We attached a winch between the back of the boat house and the concrete foundation under the sauna and pulled the boat house backwards until it was reasonably vertical.
I have then screwed fast horizontal and diagonal supports to the walls and roof inside the boat house to keep it vertical once the winch was released.
This is just a temporary repair so that the boat house survives the winter. Nest year the real work will begin to re-build it!!
