Back again

The internet is finally back again, but we can not be sure for how long.

The weather is just crazy here.  We still have no snow!  This is the view of our garden at the moment.

I have been out in the forest with Teres and Kelly, looking for a Christmas tree.  In the forest there a a thin covering of snow where the sun doesn’t reach.

Kelly found a small structure under a Spruce tree that is convinced was once a Troll’s home.  She covered it with new Spruce branches

and made a Spruce bed inside, just in case the Troll returns.

And of course as usual we made fire and had a cup of hot-chocolate.

We have had a large full moon, and I thought I would finish with a couple of pictures of that.

More soon…if we still have internet!!

Enjoying the sun

The wind seems to constantly blow from the north and so it is still cold, but at least we get some warmth from the sun, so myself and Kelly have been out with the snowmobile.

We have made fire with green Birch

and sat and grilled sausage over the fire.

We still have a lot of Pine Grosbeaks around and I have been out taking some photo’s.

And I took a nice photo of a Red Squirrel.

More and more snow…

I did not write anything last week because we had a bad storm for several days and I did not go out.

We did have a nice sunset one evening last week however.

Last Saturday i ran a knife sharpening workshop for two members of staff from Solberget Wilderness Camp.

Today myself and Kelly were out and about, made fire, grilled sausage and made hot chocolate (it was -17 degrees).

And here is a picture of us travelling 4kms to collect our post.

This evening we also had a nice sunset with some fantastic colours, which changed very rapidly.

A little bit of luck

This is as close as we get to seeing the sun at the moment.

The weather has been very strange for the past week, as it has been above freezing and temperatures have even been as high as 9 degrees C, with some rain.

I was working up on the house roof over the weekend, designing and building a platform for the chimney sweeper to be able to inspect the flue we have put up.

I was incredibly lucky because on Monday all the snow came down from the roof and if I had still been working on the roof at the time, I would have gone with it!

The stove installation is now complete and we used the stove for the first time yesterday.

new-woodburnerI made cheese and pickle toasties for everyone, in the oven (tonight it will be pizza’s).

I have constructed a wooden box, which I have mounted on to a plastic sled, to use for fetching wood from the shed.

On Tuesday the missing poles for my Thermarest cot finally arrived.  I thought I would at least receive an apology for the inconvenience, but the only thing in the packet was the items and a business card.

thermarest-cot-cascade-designs  For the first time, I have tried using a sewing machine to make a leather bag and I was pleased with the end result (hand sewing is much more relaxing though)

A long weekend ruined by such unusual summer weather!!

Myself and my friend Tommy had planned a long weekend fishing trip to the mountains last weekend from Thursday evening to Sunday evening.  The weather forecast in the mountains was strong winds and heavy and so Tommy decided we would instead stay at his cabin in Killingi where we could fish the river Kaitum.

It has been usually cold and wet this summer and there is much more water in the rivers and marshes than there would normally be.  The level in the river we planned to fish was one and a half metres higher than usual.  Here is a picture from August 2011 when myself and Teres were at Tommy’s cabin

killingi 2011and here is a picture I took last weekend

killingi 2015There is nowhere to stand and fish along the edge of the river now as the river water extends into the forest, so we had to fish from Tommy’s boat.

tommy in boatOn Thursday evening and Friday morning the weather was fine and we were able to fish.

sunset killingiOn Thursday evening I caught a Pike and a 2kg Sea trout, but unfortunately the Sea trout managed to get off the hook once we had it near to the boat!

Here is a picture I took at midnight in Killingi and as you can see it doesn’t get dark even now.

midnight in KillingiOn Friday morning we travelled 5kms upstream to fish. We had caught nothing at lunch time, but fortunately I took a large rump steak with me to grill over the fire.

tommy by fireI made a set of tongs from a forked Birch to turn the steak and it was cooked to perfection!

After lunch I caught nothing, but Tommy caught a 2kg White Fish (Sik in Swedish).

Later on Friday it began to rain with a strong wind and this continued Saturday and was forecast to continue on Sunday, so we decided to cut our fishing trip short and head home early.

A day at the cabin

Last Saturday i spent the day at my cabin.  As you can see there is still ice on the lake.

I went for a long walk while at the cabin and found a trail of feathers
