Yana Mangi

Last Tuesday evening I went fishing for a couple of hours.  I caught some small trout, which I decided to put back

but I also caught one trout that weighed 1 1/2 kgs and this 2kg trout

The following morning a lorry came with 00kgs of new fish to go in the lake

No one is allowed to fish in the lake now until after 1st July.

Last Saturday I was one of about 40 people who attended a concert by Yana Mangi, in Jokkmokk for the launch of her new CD “Free”.

Yana appeared in an episode of Ray Mears series “Bushcraft” in 2002, and both Yana and this particular programme were a big influence for me moving to Lapland.  I think her music is just fantastic!!

Majbrasa in Dokkas

Yesterday we held the first event to help raise money for the nature center we are creating in Dokkas  called Majbrasa.  Majbrasa has much history but now it is a celebration of longer days and the arrival of spring, and the burning of old to make way for the new

We opened the old school in Dokkas and put information up on the walls so that people could see and read about what we are planning to do

We also had a room in the school where we served coffee, cake and hotdogs

and another room where a local family performed live music

We also had an activity for children to go out in the forest and search for items on the paper provided to them

People began arriving at 7pm

Some people purchased sausage and cooked over a small fire

others enjoyed the warmth of the brasa are went inside the school for coffee, cake and hotdogs

We left at 9:30pm and people were still there enjoying the live music

As we drove home there was a female Capercaillie standing on the road refusing to move

Singing the “Blue’s” again

Last year I wrote about an evening I spent being entertained by The CC Blue’s Band featuring primitive skills instructor John Lord.

Like last year the band again featured guest guitarist Phil Harding who is more familiar to viewers of the Channel 4 series Time Team.

It was a really enjoyable evening with some great music like this

Singing the blues

Many of you may know John Lord as a practitioner and teacher of primitive skills but he is also a very good musician and singer. Last Saturday evening he was performing as part of a blues band and I was invited to the gig in one of his local pubs.

Here are the band

From left to right; Graham, John Mark, Paul and guest guitarist Phil Harding.

John and Paul were singing

John also played Harmonica

and sax.

My favourite performance of the night was “Honky tonk woman” and hear are a couple of short video clips from that one.
