The hot weather continues

With temperatures still around 30 degrees C the only sensible thing to do last weekend was head to a local lake to cool off.

and we were out in the lake swimming

Myself and Emma have been out fishing several evenings, but its just to warm and the fishing are not biting.  The weather is forecasted to be cooling next week!

Hot weather

For over two weeks now, we have had really hot weather with temperatures over 30 degrees and one day the temperature reached over 40 degrees!.

We have had one male reindeer around the cabin who is being driven crazy by the heat and biting insects.

I have been working up on the metal roof of the cabin where temperatures must have close to 50 degrees.  I have made a sheet metal collar around the chimney stack to prevent rain leaking in.  I have to improvise a clamp to hold the sheet metal and bend it into the desired shape.

I then rendered the brickwork above the collar to help protect it.

Wildlife camera pictures

I had my Little Acorn Wildlife camera out for 5 days to see what was coming to the log pile I had made.

There were many pictures of small rodents, which were not of good quality and many pictures of Siberian Jay; this was the best one.

This rather blurred image is of a Pied Flycatcher catching insects.

The Three-toed Woodpecker also returned, but unfortunately the Black Woodpecker didn’t.

And a family of Red Squirrels also visited several times.

4 days in Muddus National Park

I am going to write a quick advertisement here.

I will be working as a guide for Solberget Vildmarksbyn again this autumn, guiding up to 8 people around Muddus National Park, with our Reindeer as pack-animals.

We currently have places available for this activity due to cancellations.

You need to make your own travel arrangements to and from Nattavaara, from where you will be driven by minibus to Solberget.

Back home from the cabin

We have lived at the cabin for the past three weeks and arrived back home today.  Unfortunately the mobile phone coverage is so bad there, that I could not blog as much as I had planned.

I have put up many new nest boxes over the past few years and the bird population is increasing.  I managed to get a couple of pictures of the Siberian Tits nesting close to the cabin.

We have 5 pairs of Pied Flycatcher that have all reared young

Birds not using nest boxes, but that also successfully fledged young included a pair of Wood Sandpipers, a pair of Common Sandpipers and a pair of Spotted Redshank

Two pairs of Brambling reared young and a pair of Three-toed Woodpecker have a nest site close buy but I haven’t located it.  Fortunately they come to feed on a log pile that I have  put out for wildlife

as did a Black Woodpecker, but unfortunately I did not manage to get a photo of it.  The log pile has been so productive, that I put my wildlife camera there for a few days and I will put up some of the pictures it took next time.
